The final paragraph begins "The situation is unpleasant, as a third, magical option doesn't exist."
What the author has admitted in as many words though s/he clearly doesn't realise the full implications of what s/he is saying is that capitalism is finished. Capitalist expansionism from the end of World War II onwards was fuelled (literally as well as figuratively) by the abundance of natural resources and principally oil. This is coming to an end as there is only a limited amount of oil and supplies will run out some time this century. And then of course there will be the likely economic and environmental devastation to come from global warming.
Actually a third magical option does exist. The only alternative is the worldwide overthrow of capitalism and its replacement by ecologically sustainable and socialised economies based on human need, not capitalist greed.
